The Brief – Beware the attaché: EU grapples with alleged IRGC diplomats
The EU’s decision to blacklist the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation earlier this year has created a new dilemma for European capitals: what to do with Iranian military attachés still operating across the bloc under diplomatic cover.
A classified dossier seen by Euractiv alleges some Iranian military representatives stationed in Europe are active IRGC officers, including Iran’s military attaché in Poland, Mohammad Naghizadeh.
EU governments remain divided over how far to escalate pressure on Iran. While some capitals support tougher measures, others fear shutting down already fragile diplomatic channels amid mounting regional tensions and warnings from German intelligence that Tehran could intensify operations in Europe once fighting with Israel and the United States subsides.
