Finland’s defence forces have launched an investigation after drones entered Finnish territory on Sunday, in what the authorities described as a possible territorial violation.

“We are taking the matter seriously, and the security authorities have reacted immediately,” said Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.

Several small, low-flying objects were detected over a maritime area and in southeastern Finland on Sunday morning, the defence ministry said in a statement. It was not immediately clear where the drones originated from.

One drone fell north of Kouvola, while another came down east of the city, police said they were investigating. The Finnish Air Force carried out an identification mission with an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet.

Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen said on X that the investigation of the events is ongoing and further information would be provided once  verified.

The Finnish Air Force identified at least one of the drones as Ukrainian, according to YLE.
