Commission investigates cyberattack targeting EU websites

The European Commission has announced that it is investigating a cyber attack that took place on Tuesday, targeting its cloud infrastructure hosting the ‘europa.eu’ websites and leading to a data leak.

“Early findings of our ongoing investigation suggest that data have been taken from those websites,” it said in a statement on Friday evening, adding that its “swift response” contained the attack and avoided disruptions to the websites.

It added that its internal systems weren’t affected, but that it continues to investigate the incident and monitor the situation to protect the security of its internal systems and data. The institution is also in touch with other EU entities that might have been affected.

It remains unclear who is behind the attack.

Public administrations, including EU institutions, are the most frequently targeted organisations by cyberattacks, according to the EU’s cybersecurity agency ENISA’s 2025 annual analysis of the threat landscape.
